OVER 150 people turned out to wish a local doctor the best of luck in his retirement at the weekend.

Ex-patients, friends, family and locals joined Dr. John MacDonald in Wigtown on Saturday to show their thanks to the man who has been practicing in the town for 28 years and sent him on his way with a gift.
Dr. MacDonald was presented with a top-of-the-range music centre, bought with donations gathered by locals and people further afield and was also given the balance of the fund in a cheque.
Wigtown Partnership for Health chairman Donald Cameron kicked off proceedings in the supper room of the County Buildings and a testimonial was made by Reverend Jeffrey Mead.
The Reverend paid tribute to Dr. MacDonald and thanked him for his time as a doctor.
He added: "Dr. MacDonald always went beyond the call of duty and put his patients and the community before all else."
Wigtown Partnership for Health treasurer Anne Kelly said that the donations received were beyond what they had expected and that the turnout on the day was staggering.
She said: "The amount we counted up was tremendous, everyone was so willing to donate. And on the day, people had come from as far as Dumfries, Edinburgh and Dalry - people who had moved from the area but still wanted to say their thanks."
A buffet was laid on for the guests, kindly prepared by members and their parents of the many organisations Dr. MacDonald was involved in such as Galloway Mountain Rescue and Newton Stewart Rugby Football Club.
Mrs MacDonald was also presented with a gift, hers being a beautiful bouquet of flowers, from Mrs Anne Alexander who is the former matron of Newton Stewart Hospital.
And adding an emotional tone to the event was a poem from Nancy Burgess and Rena McCleary, which outlined the doctor's time in the town.
Mrs Kelly said: "The whole day was wonderful and very touching to see so many people turn up. It shows how much Dr. MacDonald will be missed from the surgery."
